Gluten-Free Market Continues Rapid Growth

The gluten-free marketplace is booming and a new forecast predicts sales to for 2011 to top $1.31billion in the United States and $2.67 billion globally.

The estimates come from Euromonitor International, which also suggests that by 2015, U.S. gluten-free product sales will reach $1.68 billion and $3.38 billion globally.

Making Sense of Celiac Around the World

This is a great article for those living in countries that may have less awareness to celiac disease. 

Linda Forster came across just that situation while living in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and her 2 year old daughter Alli started showing symptoms of celiac.  The doctor she saw informed her that Alli tested positive for celiac and said, "Don't give her gluten. Good luck."

Unsatisfied with such little information and with nowhere to turn for support, Forster set about educating herself on celiac disease and the gluten-free diet and began started her own support group, Gluten Free UAE.  Forster plans on many initiatives for the already rapidly growing group such as advocating awareness at schools.

Gluten-Free Diet Could Be Beneficial In Controlling Other Autoimmune Conditions

Check out this interesting article that discusses how the gluten-free diet can be helpful in controlling symptoms and preventing other autoimmune conditions, specifically in regards to Sjogren's disease.

Roughly 20-40% of Sjogren's patients show signs of gluten-intolerance and in turn around 30% of those first diagnosed with gluten-intolerance experience symptoms of Sjogren's disease, which is another autoimmune condition recently talked about after tennis super star Venus Williams' was diagnosed with the disorder.

More Football Stadiums Add Gluten-Free Options

This is great news for gluten-free sports fans!  More stadiums are adding gluten-free carts and expanding gluten-free options at major sporting events.

The latest is at the Green Bay Packers Stadium which responded to fan requests for food when making the decision.  Food options include gluten-free hot dogs, chili dogs, nachos, popcorn, candy, and beer.

Jennifer Ark, director of guest and stadium experience for the Packers says of the new menu that, "We wanted to react to what we were hearing in surveys and in person."

A new study from Columbia University suggests that women who are experiencing problems with infertility should get tested for celiac disease. High rates of celiac were proven in women who had unexplained fertility issues.
