There may be more cases of celiac disease in countries like India where it had previously been thought to be uncommon.
A team conducted screenings on one community in northern India by administering a structured questionnaire with questions about chronic diarrhea and other symptoms which are strong indications of celiac. Celiac disease in this north Indian community is 1 in 96, or about 1%. That means that celiac disease is more common than is recognized in India, and that rates are about the same as in other parts of the world, not lower, as conventional wisdom has held. World wide celiac rates are holding steady at 1%.
